What is Image Metadata Viewer?

Photos carry more information than just pixels. EXIF data embedded by cameras and phones can include the capture date, camera model, GPS coordinates, exposure settings, and software used to edit the file. Viewing this data is useful for photographers checking shoot details and for anyone wanting to confirm what information a photo might reveal before sharing it.

This tool reads the file's embedded metadata directly in your browser and displays it in a readable format, without uploading the image anywhere. It's a good first step before posting photos publicly, since GPS data in particular can reveal a location you didn't intend to share.

Frequently asked questions

What information does this tool show?
Dimensions in pixels, file size, format, color mode, DPI/resolution, and creation or modification date if present in the metadata.
Does it show GPS location data?
If the image has GPS coordinates in its EXIF data, they will be shown. Phone cameras embed GPS by default unless location services are disabled or stripped on upload. Use the EXIF Data Remover tool to remove location data before sharing photos publicly.
Why does my image show 72 DPI when it was taken at 300 DPI?
DPI values stored in image files are just metadata tags, not a fixed property of the pixels. A 3000x2000 pixel image has the same pixels regardless of whether the DPI tag says 72 or 300. DPI only matters when printing, not for screen display.
Can this tool edit or remove metadata?
This tool is read-only. To remove metadata including GPS data and camera information, use the EXIF Data Remover tool in the Unique Tools section.
Is my image uploaded to check the metadata?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your image is never sent to any server.
What is color mode and why does it matter?
Color mode indicates how colors are stored: RGB (red, green, blue) for screen, CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) for print. Most web images are RGB. If you need an image for professional print work, the file may need to be converted to CMYK in a print-specific application.
Is Image Metadata Viewer Free free to use?
Image Metadata Viewer Free is completely free with no subscription, no trial period, and no credit card required. There are no usage limits, watermarks, or premium tiers. The tool is funded by the existence of the wider OnlineToolsPlus platform rather than by charging users for individual tools.
Does Image Metadata Viewer Free work on mobile devices?
Yes. Image Metadata Viewer Free works on any modern smartphone or tablet — iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets. Open it in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox on your device and it functions identically to the desktop version. The interface is responsive and adjusts to smaller screens automatically.
Do I need to install anything to use Image Metadata Viewer Free?
No installation is required. Image Metadata Viewer Free runs entirely in your web browser. Open the page and start using it immediately. There is no app to download, no browser extension to install, and no account to create. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android — any device with a modern browser.
Is my data private when using Image Metadata Viewer Free?
Yes. All processing happens locally in your browser. No data you enter — text, files, or settings — is sent to any server or stored anywhere outside your device. OnlineToolsPlus has no server-side processing for this tool. Your data is as private as anything else on your device.
